Local councils received £328 million last year in parking fines, according to new Tax Payers’ Alliance statistics.
Virtually all British councils replied to the survey, which looked at how much councils received in the 2008/09 financial year in on-street and off-street parking fines.
The £328m figure equates to every person in the UK receiving £6.14 in parking fines last year. Kensington and Chelsea residents forked out the most, with an average fine of £85 per person living in the area.
The amount collected last year was 16 per cent lower than in 2007/08, which the Tax Payers’ Alliance believes is down to motorists parking more cautiously due to the risk of being fined in the recession.
