Nissan has announced plans to restart a third shift at its Burnaston plant, creating 400 jobs.
The plant manufactures the Qashqai, Micra and Note.
With the economy in recession and overall UK car sales down on the previous year, Nissan cut production back to two shifts at Sunderland in January last year.
It has described the reinstatement of the third shift as "temporary", estimating it will run for six months as a result of a surge in demand for the Qashqai, which is due to be facelifted in March.
In addition to 400 workers, 160 workers already on fixed-term contracts will be retained.
The new jobs will be based on fixed term contracts.
