New supermini to arrive in autumn 2011 following its official launch at the Paris motor show

Chevrolet has launched its all-new production Aveo at the Paris motor show, ahead of UK sales starting in a year’s time.

The hot hatch Aveo RS concept at Detroit in January previewed the new car's looks earlier this year and much of the styling has been carried over into production.

At the front it gets twin headlamps and Chevrolet’s split front grille, although the concept’s fog light design doesn’t carry over.

Other carry-over features from the show car include its rear handles being hidden in the C-pillars and its rising shoulder line, along with a sharply creased bonnet.

The Aveo is longer and wider than the car it replaces, while the interior is more spacious, too; Chevrolet claims its cargo space is among the best in the supermini class.

No interior pictures have been released, but it will include a motorcycle-inspired instrument cluster, a wrap-around fascia and blue backlighting for the centre console. USB and Bluetooth connectivity will both be standard.

Chevrolet says the Aveo’s chassis has been tuned specifically for European customers and claims it will be both comfortable and responsive.

Petrol engines include an 85bhp 1.2 and a 99bhp 1.4, while a 1.3 diesel unit with stop-start will be available with either 74bhp or 94bhp.

Chevrolet will introduce a six-speed automatic transmission as an option on the 1.4 petrol engine; manual options include five- or six-speed depending on engine choice.
