New speed cameras will be axed under a Conservative government, as part of a range new motoring proposals to be unveiled at the Tory party conference today.
Theresa Villiers, the shadow Transport secretary, will pledge to force the police and councils to use alternative means to combat speeding motorists.
The plans are one of a raft of measures designed to appease motorists due to be unveiled at the conference.
New laws would also be introduced to stop motorways being shut for hours following accidents. The Tories also plan to battle rogue wheel clampers and address traffic lights that stay red for too long.
Miss Villiers is expected to say today: “Labour’s army of speed cameras is not the best way to make our roads safer. We will switch to alternative, better, ways to improve road safety.
"It is time to say enough is enough on fixed speed cameras – we have reached the high water mark. A Conservative Government would not fund any new fixed speed cameras.”
The Conservatives also plan to stop the roll out of average speed cameras. Local councils will be able to pilot their own traffic schemes and efforts will be made to stop repeated road works under the new measures.
