Hybrid two-pot petrol Toyota IQs and Aygos could come to production by 2020

Future versions of the Toyota iQ and Aygo could be in line for a downsized two-cylinder petrol engine mated to a more compact version of Toyota’s hybrid system.

The firm showed its vision for a supermini in 2020 at the Geneva motor show in March with its FT-Bh concept, which likewise uses a two-cylinder petrol engine mated to a hybrid system.

The powertrain could come to production sooner than 2020, Toyota GB managing director Jon Williams confirming that it had been developed for both
“an existing or future car”.

“The concept shows the packaging potential for a small hybrid, and it wasn’t just developed for a concept,” he confirmed. “There are no concrete plans at present, but it’s something we’ve studied.”
