Voting has closed for the 2016 Autocar Readers' Champion. At the halfway point, the top 10 cars featured seven cars designed or built in Britain

The poll for the 2016 Autocar Readers' Champion closed this morning, after two weeks of voting.

Seven cars that have been made or created in Britain are currently among the top 10 vehicles in contention for the title of Autocar Readers’ Champion, but the results are in, and will be announced at the new-look Autocar Awards on 24 May at Silverstone.

The cars which were most popular with voters at the halfway point are a diverse selection, with the Morgan 3 Wheeler sitting alongside the likes of the Range Rover Sport, Lotus Elise and McLaren 570S. Popular non-Brits included the all-new Volvo XC90 and the all-electric Tesla Model S.

At the halfway point, the top 10 featured the following cars, which are arranged in alphabetical order:

Bentley Bentayga

Citroën Grand C4 Picasso

Jaguar XE

Land Rover Discovery

Lotus Elise

McLaren 570S

Morgan 3 Wheeler

Range Rover Sport

Tesla Model S

Volvo XC90

Other Brits in the list include the likes of the BAC Mono, the Ariel Atom and its all-terrain equivalent, the Ariel Nomad, and the Caterham Seven 620S.

They are up against big names from around the world, such as the BMW 3 Series and M235i, the Ferrari 488 GTB and F12, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. As well as the luxury cars and supercars, models such as the Ford Fiesta ST, Mazda 3 and Volkswagen Up are in contention, too.

Jim Holder, editorial director of Autocar, PistonHeads and What Car?, said: “With so many fantastic cars from around the world in contention for the title of Autocar Readers’ Champion, it is great to see the Brits doing so well in initial voting.

“The diversity of the vehicles being voted for is a real testament to the British car industry, showing that we can produce everything from go-anywhere luxury in the form of the Range Rover to outright fun from the Morgan 3 Wheeler and Lotus Elise. It will be fascinating to see what emerges triumphant when voting closes.”
