The new Touareg is more than 200kg lighter than the outgoing model, despite an increase in length of 20mm. VW also claims the range is now 20 per cent more efficient.

Three powertrains will be available in the UK: the 237bhp 3.0-litre V6 TDI, the 335bhp 4.2-litre V8 TDI and the 375bhp petrol-electric 3.0-litre TSI Hybrid. All models come equipped with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
In £38,255 entry-level SE guise, the V6 TDI model has combined fuel economy of 38.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 195g/km. By comparison, the £54,995 Hybrid has fuel economy of 34.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 193g/km.
VW expects the entry-level model to be the biggest seller.
Standard equipment includes leather seats, a touchscreen sat-nav with DAB radio and burr walnut interior trim.
The car is now available to order in the UK and the first examples will be delivered to customers in October. The order books for the Hybrid open next month.
