Concept race car set to go into production in 2012; based on TT RS; priced from £100k

Audi has revealed this concept GT4 version of the TT.

Launched in Shanghai at the season finale of the DTM, a championship won by Britain’s Paul di Resta, the concept previews an affordable off-the-shelf racer that will be available from 2012.

Adaptations from the road car that the GT4 race concept is based on include a rollcage and a reinforced fuel tank, while carbonfibre-reinforced plastic is used for the bonnet, doors and boot lid. The windows are made from plastic.

The styling of the GT4 racer is inspired by the TT RS road car, sporting that car’s front and rear aprons and boot lid.

Power comes from a 335bhp TFSI engine, almost certain to the same five-cylinder unit used in the TT RS and RS3 road cars, and it’s mated to an S-tronic gearbox with a locking differential.

Prices for the car will start from 120,000 euros (£101,000) and Audi says it’s targeting sales in China as much as Europe, given its growth and popularity.

Former British Touring Car Championship champion Frank Biela did some demonstration laps on the Shanghai street circuit.
